a week later ... - The Paranoid Android
...musings of a mechanically depressed robot...
a week later ...
I didn't update last week for a couple of reasons. The biggest being I did nothing to write about. To say I did nothing at all would only be the mildest of exaggerations. Work has been getting me down. There is a list of deadlines as long as my arm, and they are all rapidly approaching with zero chance of me actually meeting any.

I have been teaching myself a little ASP and have mastered the ability to chuck the contents of a database out on to a web page. I think my next step is to get the web pages to update the database! .. For that I'll need some knowledge of security measures and suchlike (I don't want any old person to be able to trash my database!)

This all started off as an idea TD had about running a fantasy football league. There are hundreds of sites out there that offer similar (if not the same) options, but our site is different in as much as it is limited to people we know. That way the prize money will be going to people who will take you down the pub with it! It went through many guises until TD decided on a web page. The problem would be updating it every week. The first time round we did it (WorldCup2002) we cut the game down a little, didn't have the facilities for transfers, just copied the points database from one of the big sites. It was a big hassle, TD had to manually update about 20 web pages with tables of the teams scoring etc.

When he decided he'd do it again for the premiership 2002/3 we knew manually updating web pages from spreadsheet information was a no-go. He'd found a web page host (Brinkster.com) that allowed ASP scripting. So now all we needed was database of information, and the script to read the database and put the values in the right place.

Reading info from a database on a remote web-space turned out to be a royal pain in the arse. Most all of the online tutorials are geared for people writing this on their own machines using IIS or PWS for windows. I'd read through 20 pages of stuff I'd already read through half a dozen times or more, and then see the dreaded "Go to control panel, and look for ODBC data sources."
Then I found the Web Wiz Guide (Actually TD found it about 3 weeks before me.. but that’s another story) . It not only doesn't assume you have full control over the machine you will be running your web pages from, it also provides really cool pre-made programs you can run on any ASP enabled website.

So after a couple of late nights playing with this stuff, I have managed to get a League table of our 33 players, with links to their team page which lets them know how they got their points. Wanna see it? It's here. You'll have to excuse the colours, they are all TD's fault! He has put together the main web site ... I am only responsible for the League table , and the team stats pages.
