British Olympic Shame - The Paranoid Android

British Olympic Shame
The Olympics is finally over, and I'm so relieved as we were making such a spectacle of ourselves.

Not the athletes, you understand - but the population of this once great isle who were left at home. It would appear that we are incapable of accepting even to ourselves that we are good at something.

The weekend of the 16/17 August we had one of our greatest haul of medals in 100 years. (The 1908 Olympics were held in London where a third of the entrants were for "Team GB" so, unsurprisingly perhaps, we won almost everything.) When I get into work the following week all I heard is how all our medals were in "sitting down" sports... as if that's not quite as good as a medal in any other sport.

People writing in to the Metro and leaving comments on the BBC news site have said that we've only got medals in the "elite" sports.

Cycling is elite now?

Why can't the British just once stand back as say - "Fucking hell we did magnificently there!" Here we are on an island that could fit 100 times into the USA, China and Russia and we gave the largest(in area) of those a run for their money. We beat all our peers who would normally have done so much better that us... Germany, France, and best of all Australia!

There have also been complaints that the BBC should not be referring to "Team GB" as this excludes Northern Ireland (who are part of the United Kingdom , but not part of Great Britain) but a little research can go a long way. Team GB goes back to the 1908 Olympics where the IOC assigned the name Great Britain to the UK and Ireland(both North and South). Today Northern Irish folk can, if they so wish, compete for GBR or IRL.

Lastly now the focus has turned on London's hosting of the 2012 games, they nay-sayers are out in force saying how bad it will be and how we will never be able to put on a games like Beijing. With that sort of mentality, of course we can't.

We have lost all pride as a nation, and until we can regain it we are doomed to the self fulfilling prophecies of failure.

The Aussie bashing is rife at the moment *because* it happens so rarely.

Here in work (at least) the Australians have been giving us stick for months before the Olympics about how we should have all the excuses ready for when we fail... although I will give them my upmost respect as they have taken their defeat very well! Many pints were wagered and as there are considerably fewer of them then there are Brit's it could end up being expensive! :)

I don't know why it is we should be so competitive against one another... (as an aside... the South Africans in the office have started ribbing us about the Cricket now!) but it stays pretty friendly especially after a few beers!

What happened to cool Britannia?

I think it is the low self esteem that actually makes Britain try so hard. It was a brilliant haul of medals.
