Vote Rigging in the Baltics? - The Paranoid Android

Vote Rigging in the Baltics?
It was Eurovision night on Saturday... so I took a couple bottles of wine to the 'rents and they fed me pizza while we watched (and judged in our own strange way) the acts that made it through to the final.

It was perhaps the worse competition in living memory. Many of the songs were bland euro-trash-pop and too many of the acts were taking it seriously. There were a couple of exceptions - the Latvian entry was fantastically piratey quirky and the Azerbaijan entry was straight off a Meatloaf Album cover (shame about the actual song). The Bosnia & Herzegovina entry was so bad it looped out of bad into genius and then all the way around back to bad again.

I actually liked the Iceland one (coming after Croatia and Poland I would have liked almost anything!) - it was very 80's synth-dance-pop like. I'm a sucker for synth music :)

Then came the voting... this year was much the same as last year in as much as the voting was exactly the same regardless of the quality of the song. People in the Baltics voted for other countries in the Baltics, the Nordic folk voted for the other Nordic countries, and southern Europe voted for their neighbours too. We got bugger all votes (finishing joint last with Germany and Poland on 14 points)... and in absolute last place - based on the number of "top votes" (Germany got a 12 and Poland got a 10, while we only got an 8).

There are some interesting opinions about this - but I'm not going to spend a lot of time on them here... maybe another post at a later date.

Wogan is now considering quitting as commentator for the TV show as the voting is now so bad. I thought he wasn't quite on form this year... the jokes weren't quite as witty and he was bordering on being rude a few times... which may have something to do with a ban on alcohol this year?

After that madness the rest of the weekend pales into insignificance. I baked some bread, laundered clothes, tidied in a half hearted way, and spent way too much time watching Scrubs (it was famous face weekend!).

The extra day off flew by - whilst it continued to persistently rain outside. Monday registered more than 24mm (about an inch) of rain on my new gadget!

I still find it a tad amusing that 10 years ago they were committing mass genecide against eachother but now the former Yugoslav republics give 12 points to eachother - maybe Eurovision should have brokered the peace treaty rather than the UN?

One of the interesting opinions I mentioned was that the countries still have misgivings bordering on hatred for one another, but they share a common culture, especially musically... so they are in fact voting for the song they like the best after all.
