More Drama!
More thoughts on the recent suspension of accounts on LJ...

I admit to having something of a double standard.  I will quite happily read about murder, war, torture, and all other types of gruesome behaviour in a good story, but I find the topic of child sex so abhorrent that I can't see the need for it - and would question the values of the person writing it.  This includes those people writing alternate versions of harry potter where half of the characters are bedding the other half.  Especially those people.

Someone made an interesting point about that - the fact that most of the fan-fic slash crap is written by 16 year old girls makes it "acceptable"... if it were written by 35 year old males they would be arrested.  There's another double standard for you!

Should there be laws against people writing about children having sex?  Should people have the right to write fiction about anything?

What is the difference between reading about a murder and reading about under age sex?

In other messed up news - I got my restated council tax bill through the mail this morning.  As I now live alone I am entitled to a 25% discount.  I was a little shocked to get a bill saying I owed money for last year now, and that I appear to owe all of this year's new amount too... I know for a fact I paid too much last year even before my discount is taken into consideration.

I called them today.  As my old bill was in joint names and my new bill is obviously in just my name there are now two accounts... one with a large credit balance - and one with a slightly larger debit balance.  To move the credit balance across I need to write them a letter saying I'm okay with that... and... Misty has to write them a letter too as she is the second name on the account with the credit balance.

It's just as well I know how to contact her... isn't it?  I can't believe just how badly run the councils are.

Fifteen year old kids boink fifteen year olds, but if a thirty-five year old boinks a fifteen year old, they're arrested! Damn these double-standards, indeed! How dare they, the little fuckers. Arrest everybody! Illegalize underage sex -- arrest every teenager who dares to experiment with their sexuality (in writing or otherwise) before the age of consent!

Also, to clarify things a little, not all slash fanfiction is Harry Potter. And not all Harry Potter fanfiction is "pedophilia" -- most of the writers I know tend to go after the Hogwarts teaching faculty, and I've yet to see a well-accepted story in which the characters are having sex below the age of consent.

Also, let's ban the Sweet Valley books.

15 year olds should not be boinking anyone - 15 or otherwise. Underage (under 16 in the UK) sex is illegal for a reason. Like it or not you either live within the law or you pay the consequences.

Experimenting with your sexuality is up to you - just no boinking anyone until you are legal.

I fail to see how writing about two fictional characters engaging in an illegal sexual act is "experimenting with my sexuality".

I used the Harry Potter slash as an example because I have had the misfortune to have read some of it. It was poorly written underage gay porn under the guise of fanfic. I didn't say all fanfic was pornographic... I specifically said "the fanfic slash crap" which could mean I think all fanfic slash is crap - or I was specifying the crap end of fanfic slash scale. Slash by it's definition is about sex... and therefore HP slash is about underage sex... which was the point of my post.

I have to argue with you here. You're contradicting yourself with the second sentence. Didn't your first sentence say 'Experimenting...is up to you'? In other words, you've just said "It's your life, figure it out how you will. Except, ya know, don't do X because I don't agree with it."

You are male. You do not 'experiement' in the same way that young women do (obviously). I think you're being a bit too harsh on 15 year old girls. If they want to write about sex with their peers, how is that harmful to you? Women figure things out through talking and writing and basically using 'sounding boards'. Men play video games (WoW anyone?), read newspapers, and go hide in their caves to sort their problems.

I don't expect to ever read a piece of fanfic in your journal. Ha! Never in a million years. But if some underage girl wants to write Harry Potter fanfic, then let her - we don't have to read her. I'm not saying it's a great thing, but if it's her journal, and you aren't reading it, why get yer knickers in a twist over it? I would rather they use their talents to write original stories and characters, but I'm not going to have a go just because she wants to explore these things through text.

It's better that they do it in text than do it in real life.

Honestly? I would prefer Six Apart to have the balls to tell people to screw off, that it's their site, freedom of speech, blah blah blah. Because once they set the standards for deleting accounts (whatever the reason!!!!), they will have to maintain this, which will cost them money which they will then pass on to me. And as I don't read any of the 'problem' journals in question, why should I have to pay for someone to monitor and suspend them.

However, if they want to play nannystate to their customers, then by all means they can have at it. I think they could have handled the whole friggin' situation far better than they have. But at least they apologised for making a mess of it.

I'm not saying that I want to read about incest or rape or child abuse in any form. I'm not condoning the harm of children, I find it repulsive and I could never understand in a million years why someone would want to have sex with a child. I think there are some fucked up people in the world, and it's a shame they have access to the internet. But if LJ hadn't effed it up so badly, would any of this be the big drama it is now? Would the rest of the world now be associating Harry Potter fanfic with paedophilia?

(Sorry, not all of that was directed at you. I have arguments for the fic writers as well - ie You were stupid enough to make it public when you know that children could have access to it. ie Write your own original characters. ie The Terms and Conditions of LJ do state that to write about such things will result in the suspension or deletion of your account. You broke the rules, deal with it. ie That's just sick. Please don't.)

I'm not sure my two sentences contradicted each other... because a girl writing about two boys having sex surely cant be experimenting with her sexuality... and you know slash is all about boy meets boy sex.

You are right in as much as I have no idea how young females experiment! Writing about having sex *is* better than actually having sex when you are 15. But... Writing about underage sex is something of a metaphorical red flag to the paedophile bull... so I'm wonfering if they should be prevented from publishing these writings on an open forum such as LJ as protection against themselves. Wanna write your sexual experiments up? - use a paper journal.

I would also like Six Apart to have the balls to state clearly in the TOS that any writings relating to illegal activities is a suspendable/terminatable offence.

Glad I kept everything in my name only, I wouldn't be able to contact Andi at all to get any credits back! Even then he'd probably write to them and ask for a cheque in his name (even though he never paid a penny). My council takes over a month to reply to one email!

As for the under-age sex fiction, I personally think it would only encourage the perverts. The world has changed so much since I was 15, I wouldn't have even dreamt about writing such things, let alone doing them lol.

Everything seems to be about sex these days, morales are fading fast and the kids arent kids any more, at least they dont think they are. I agree with you, the law is in place for a reason. Find me someone my age who had sex underage and doesnt regret it. I reckon you'd be hard pushed to find one. Kids should be kids and enjoy their childhood. Sex only complicates things, why should a child have a complicated life.

There was a program on a week or so ago and it was about underage sex. The girls on the program even said they have sex with anyone who asks because they feel loved for those few seconds.. er.. minutes. One of the girls went for STI (think it should still be STD, sounds more serious) tests and came back clear. The nurse told her one if 4 girls under 25 have chlamydia, that is shocking statistics, and chlamydia can make you infertile. She'd forgot this fact by the time she'd got home and laughed and joked about it with her friends! If kids don't understand the seriousness of the consequences of their actions, they shouldnt be doing it.
