More PC crap
So I finally got around to rebuilding the PC on the weekend.  Rather than use Misty's old machine, I used mine.  Hers appears to eat HDD's like candy.  Mine is just slow :(

I put a new drive in and managed to get Big E's copy of XP installed and updated to SP2.  This took the most part of Sunday so it was late in the evening that I installed WoW and logged in to ensure it all worked.

I had some fun with my USB mouse.  Each time the computer would start it would "find" a new device... and then the USB mouse would freeze (causing me to think the PC had froze) but it was just the mouse.  The PS/2 mouse would work fine.  I moved a couple of the cards (literally - I moved them across one slot each) and that stopped the freezing.

I then made the mistake of installing a wireless network card.  This caused not only the USB mouse to freeze, but the whole machine just a couple of minutes later.

This means I will have to have the damn 100ft cable draped down the stairs if I want to be online in the front room.

All in all this was a painless install/build.  At this rate I will be able to install windows blindfold in less than an hour!

To reward myself for the success I played WoW for a couple hours and levelled my Paladin a couple of times.

I've not had much luck with wi-fi. Granted, the kit I have is getting a bit old now, most of it is still 802.11b.

I'm running broadband via cable (NTL) but as that falls over quite often I'm also using broadband via wi-fi to my wifes ADSL link.

Wi-fi does not seem to work well between floors, even if the hub is directly above the computer. The signal must be very directional.

I wonder if you have a problem with your expansion slots that is causing the freezing? I've played the "expansion shuffle" before, not a fun game.

I too have my WiFi access point on a different floor - but I've managed to get fantastic reception downstairs by pointing one of the "ears" at 90 degrees to the other and changing the channel to 8.

I beleive there are a couple of other wireless networks in my neighbourhood (hence the changing of channel) which was buggering me up a bit to start. The wonky ears seem to help with the upstairs downstairs thing.

The expansion slot shuffle is a thankless task: As I tried just about every combination of the 5 slots I have (with 3 cards - that's about 3 hours of combinations!) I'm wondering if it is a driver conflict. I might spend some time searching for driver updates online and try again - but I had enough over the weekend and the big network cable is staying! :)
