Rumours of my death... - The Paranoid Android

Rumours of my death...
Back in work today.

I've not been very well in the... er... stomach department recently.  Being more than a handful of steps from the toilet was very brave, and very foolish.

For this reason I have been working from home for the last two days.  This is not as great as it first seems... sure I can have the radio on and have full access to my own personal kitchen, but I also have access to the TV, my computer, and the cats... all of which put a serious dent in my productivity.

I was trying to gross out my work mate who sit next to me.  He was asking what was wrong with me so I was describing the events of Monday in Sainsbury's.

I was walking around with Misty when I had that nasty feeling of being just 5 seconds from exploding.  I made my way to the toilet in Sainsbury's where I was confronted by a sign on the cubicle that said "toilet out of order due to vandalism."  I was about ready to dump in the sink but I noticed the cubicle door was not locked so I went in anyway.

Imagine the scene from Trainspotting where Renton has just taken the suppositories and rushes into the pub toilet.  I had to hover above the seat in fear of the damn thing biting me.

That's how I described it to my work mate.  In reality it wasn't quite that bad... but it was bad enough.  Given the choice between using it and shitting myself it had to be used.

Joanne visited yesterday with nice medicine and her new laptop.  She wanted me to set up the wireless network.  This should be easy as both my and my parents wireless networks are the same.  This means I can take our laptop to my parents and surf using their broadband! :)  It also enables me to set up their laptops from home.  It's win-win all the way!

I switch on Jo's machine and name it and create her account and all that cool stuff before setting up the wireless connection.  It would not recognise my wireless network.  Our laptop which was sat beside it was connected fine, but the new machine would not connect.  Admitting some form of defeat I got the "Quick Start" manual out of the box only to find it was for an entirely different machine!

Back to the drawing board: I removed all security measures on my access point and still the laptop would not connect... in fact it was very difficult to configure it for an open network - which has to be a step in the right direction.

Eventually I gave up and got my sister to call the helpline.  After a couple of the usual "gauge the stupidity of the caller" type questions (Is there a wireless router in the house?) The guy on the phone asked my sister to press the little button next to the power button.  Yup - you guessed it - the wireless adapter has its own on/off switch.  The guy on the phone said that information was in the Quick Start manual I didn't have!

After a quick chat on the phone when she got home, sis was up and running with her new machine in no time.  I learn something new every day!

In previous news: Saturday I went to visit the "big fella," or Big E.  We had a damn good chat and reminisced about the UCD days and times gone by in general.  He also gave me XP install disks so I could fix Misty's machine.  Big E is the man with the install disks for just about everything.

Sunday I spent most of the day trying to get XP installed.  We have a buggered version of XP home on the drive... and a spare drive.  The XP Home disk E gave me wasn't bootable so repairing the buggered version was not going to happen!  Installing XP Pro on the spare drive started off easy enough - but got tricky towards the end.  Dell in their infinite dumbness don't use standard chipsets, so XP doesn't recognise the network card (for example) and the drivers on the disks Dell supplied wasn't going to work no matter how many times I tried.  I finally found an old network card I had knocking around in the office - and XP recognised that straight away!  Once I was able to access the internet getting drivers for the graphics card and dodgy on board network port was a piece of cake.

By the time Misty got home (bawling! - see her post here) I had installed WOW and had met G for some joint monster bashing.

So there we are - back to Monday and dodgy stomachs...
Monday evening misty got a bug on about the spare room, so she sorted all our books out and cleared the wardrobes of clothes that can be given to charity and I sorted the "big box o' cables."  This was originally a box my 19" CRT monitor came in- so you can sort of gauge the size - and it was full - really full - of cables of almost every conceivable sort.  Most of these cables have no use any more and many where broken.  I created a pile of rubbish, and tied all the currently useful cables up so the spaghetti sprites wont be able to knit them together.

I also found a pocket year planner from 1995.  1995 was my "Rock Star" year - so I have the dates of my first ever gig at the Bubblegum Club, plus the dates of my Rock'n'Roll week where we gigged at the Marquee Club (before it was a Lloyd's Bar) and then played at the Rochester European Food and Beer Festival !!

I will be backdating entries with my somewhat rose tinted memories of these events at a later date! :)
