I hate almost everyone... and now I know why...
Walking to the train last night JAP threw a tantrum (okay she whinged a little) because we were cut up a few times trying to get to our platform.  We decided we hated people.  Not actual people we know - just the rest of the people.  The selfish ones - the rude ones - "the rest."

I bring this to your attention because I have just read the most compelling reason *why* I hate almost everybody.

My rant about the weekend - selfish people spoiling stuff for everybody else - it's all explained.

Inside the Monkey Sphere by David Wong.

Unfortunately that's all it does - explains why.  There would appear to be no solution.  I will continue to hate almost everybody - "they" will continue to be selfish fuckers who are intent on spoiling my enjoyment of life.

Quite depressing really isn't it?

You hate "everyone" because they're all annoying!! :oD

You walked to the train station with a Jewish American Princess???

I read this - it was HIGHLY amusing!! - and it seems to me to be a very simplified version of Psychology 101. Ingroup/Outgroup theories do absolutely explain why we place more value on the people inside our group than the ones outside...but they fail to adequately explain why it's ok to burgle/rape/murder someone we don't know. It's not ok just because they're not in our group...it's ok because there's something wrong inside us that says that laws were made to be broken, OR that there is no one in my ingroup except me!! Therefor, I don't have to worry about what I do to you, because you aren't a person...only what happens to ME matters.

(I would really like to be one of those people, somedays.) ;o)

It also fails to explain people who care as much about entire civilizations as they do their neighbors. Granted, few and far between. But Mother Theresa? Was all of India her monkeysphere? Because that's like, SO more than 150 people! LOL!

I really do like his analogy, and I wonder how the human mind will evolve to deal with changing society. In a time when we lived a few hundred people per village and couldn't easily communicate between, it was all very well for us not to see anyone outside of our own as people. But the world has changed, which means physically, our minds should adapt as well. If we can evolvolution can do something as useless as have us be born without pinky toes or wisdom teeth, you'd think it could be useful and fix our brains too!

Re: You hate "everyone" because they're all annoying!! :oD

There is a clever clause that means you are nice to everyone (or at least everyone in a certain group) that is mentioned in the article - the use of the divine to "personalise" an entire group.

"God says you have to act this way" - you have added a single person to your monkey-sphere so you care what He says so do what he asks you to.

This falls down when religion gets all insular and it excludes people from the "do nice things" commandment.

I do wonder if we will evolve to cope with the "global village" before we do something stupid and wipe us all out!

P.S. JAP is a girl at work. It's her initials from before she was married - but as a nickname it's stuck.

I'll guess that'll be the same for The Colonel (also related to her surname) when she gets married later this year!

I don't hate everyone.

Just those I know, I've met or have heard of.

Bugger.

That *is* everybody.

I like most of the people I know.

It always puzzled me why I hated everyone else - the logic in me extrapolated "like most people I know" to "should like most people in the world"

The monkeysphere theory says that the people outside your monkeysphere are not people (to you) so now that makes sense... kinda. :)

That was meant to be a joke.

The trouble was, I really felt very Anti-Everybody at the time I wrote it.

Not to worry, Life has a habit of turning right back around. Hope you and your very *good* lady are doing well in this chilly weather.
