...musings of a mechanically depressed robot...
From thenulldevice http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/4758636.stm - one of the few news articles about the internet on a mainstream site (the BBC in this case) that seems to know what it's talking about.  Well worth a read.

From idigital A heart warming story about an autistic kid who gets to play basket ball on the last game of the season. - Be sure to have your hankie at the ready!

From marieoroumania For the women of South Dakota: An abortion manual.  Whatever your stance on the pro-life/pro-choice debate, the fact that safe legal abortions are banned outright in SD must give pause for thought.  The comments are well worth reading.

If that lot isn't enough of a roller-coaster for you... you really need to get out more!

Normal service will resume shortly

Got to finish with something light hearted after that lot really.

Yeah...I am very pro-life, mostly because I believe murder in any form is wrong, and I believe the fetus is alive. But that said, when a friend of my family found herself 6 months pregnant with a baby who had about 2% chance of being born alive, about a .000006% chance of living past the moment of birth, and herself in great peril of death if she didn't terminate the pregnancy, my thoughts on the legalization of abortion changed.

Because she was about 6 months along (you can't have an abortion after about 12 weeks in Ohio, I think. Maybe 16 weeks.), she was going to have to fly to another state (and all the expenses that travel would include) and pay $3,000.00 out of her own pocket (insurance wouldn't cover it) for the procedure that her doctors here were recommending as the only way to save her own life. All of the stress of trying to come up with that kind of money out of thin air, while trying to deal with the fact that the baby she'd been falling in love with over the past six months was so sick it would soon be dead, that she'd never be able to hold it in her arms and love it. It was a horrible, horrible situation.

"Fortunately", she miscarried a week later and thankfuly lived through it, so she didn't have to make the decision to do that...but what an incredibly horrible situation to be in. I don't envy the women in SD.

I find it hard to understand people who claim to be pro-life, but are
willing to endanger the life of the mother in those cases. Can it be they forget the mother has a life too?

In a perfect world... the debate would be unnecessary. Until we live in a perfect world - I believe there needs to be safe options available to everyone.

The ban in South Dakota isn't so bad since there aren't any pre-menopausal women living there. They've all moved to Minneapolis.

They moved before the ban, so..

You're serious? I heard people say there was a mass exodus - I wondered if it was just political commentary.
seattleforge From: seattleforge Date: March 11th, 2006 03:20 am (UTC) (Link)
Well, the mass exodus has been going on for 30 years. There isn't much there for youngins.
There was hope when Great Plains software was booming and attracting people back.. but then MS bought them and drained them.
