My wife seems to get through a pair of headphones each year. If the ear parts don't physically come off of the head band then we get cable breakdown and one channel or the other goes quiet.

I've had the same pair of headphones for at least five years. I let my 16 year old use my computer once and he complains that "the headphones are broken". Sure enough the left ear has broken off of the head band and the right channel has gone silent.

Back in the Tandy days headphones used to be big, heavy with a metal band across the head, spring twisted cable and a huge 1/4 inch plug. In the move to miniturisation we've ended up with plastic head bands which stretch over time, 10m long cable which, no matter how you route it, ends up under the wheels of your chair and a general product life of about a year.
