I'm a law breaker... and a firewall stoppa...
I introduced my sister, Jo, to the world of music piracy last night.

Jo is half of a singing duet. They have been offered some work where they have to "take on" a decade. Jo got the 80's, so needs to find about an hour's worth of material to sing and dress up in 80's style.

Looking back, there were far more male acts in the 80's than there were female... so she wanted to find as many 80's tunes she could possibly sing so she has a decent choice. Jo had this idea you could just download music from the "intarweb" - but I pointed out the problem with this - no band would ever make any money!

Jo has only just got into the whole PC thing, but just like the parental units, she's jumping in head first.

I have used WinMX for my MP3 needs (which for the most part are legal!) so I showed her how to use it. At least that was the plan! All the computers at my parents are behind a firewall. One of my old firewalls to be precise, so configuring the ports required by WinMX was as easy as enabling the settings I used to use, just changing the destination IP to that of my sisters computer. Easy yes?

WinMX was having serious problems connecting to it's server. once connected it wasn't allowing another client to connect to Jo's computer. In short - it was börked. I played a little with the WinDoze firewall, which appeared to recognise the fact that WinMX required the extra ports to be open, but you can never be sure with WinDoze shyte can you?

After about an hour of frustration - the only way WinMX would connect if I changed the settings to "Bastard Firewall I Have No Power Over" - and then the number of clients you can connect to are severely reduced.

I checked all the running apps and had a flash of inspiration... her PC included a pre installed version of PC-cillin Internet Security which used to be a free and surprising good anti virus application. I wondered if it had been "improved" to include a firewall... I was right.

I had a quick look to see if I could create an exception for the WinMX ports, but nothing readily apparent allowed me to do this - so I switched it off. After all - how many firewalls does a single PC require?

Once this was accomplished I could run WinMX as it should be - loads of search results - fast connections and my sister was all set up to illegally download music from others PC's.

Re: Thank goodness for law-breakers....

"Angel Baby" Rosie and the Originals.

It obviously didn't do too well as it doesn't appear in "the book" but as the lyric was really, really sloppy and I was only sweet 15 it was special at the time.
