A step too far? - The Caledonian Challenge
This year I will be participating in the Caledonian Challenge. I have been meaning to have a go at this for the past couple of years - even training for it a little in 2003.

The challenge doesn't sound much at first... walk 54 miles in 24 hour along the West Highland Way, but the West Highland Way is not so named for shits and giggles. The walk will start a little above sea level, rising in places to as much as 550m - that's about half a mile UP, finally ending around the same level as started.

topology

The route starts at Fort William at the base of Ben Nevis - Britain's tallest mountain - finishing at Loch Lomond.

map

We set out on 18th June (the closest weekend to midsummers day for maximum daylight) in the morning - hopefully finishing the 54 miles by the same time the following morning.

Why am I doing this? - you may well ask. Partly it's the challenge. Partly it's the team spirit (I'll be walking with about 12-14 other people from work.) Lastly it's the charity as it is a sponsored event. If any of you nice chaps and chapesses want to sponsor me I'd be most grateful!

I hope to start my training proper (I've been walking that extra tube stop for the last week or so now) this weekend or the next with a 4-5 mile walk, working up to a 30 odd mile one about a month before the event.

All I hope for is good weather and the strength of mind to haul my ass across the finish line... I hope to be journalling my progress along the way (signal permitting!)!

A very important task... after all - if the wife's not happy - who will look after me when i get back?

Your Mum? ;-)

However, if Misty doesn't end up going, I'm more than happy to distract her while you're gone. I'll try not to get her into too much trouble. Or would that be the other way around?

Good luck with the 5 mile hike this weekend. :D

Sounds like a lot of fun.

Last time I did anything like that I was still at college.

Which charity are you doing it for?

The charidee is the Scotish Community Foundation - details of which you can find on the website I linked at the begining of my post.

We had a meeting with one of the guys who's involved with the organisation... and he said it was no walk in the park!

He then procedded to tell how he ran it in just over 10 hours last year.

I will be aiming for finishing within the 24... nothing more!

You're mad

James - take my advice and don't do it, You'll get nothing out of it. Just go as support and laugh at the others.
