Another year older - a new one just begun...
What a weekend!

Autumn is my favourite time of year. Specifically the end of October/beginning of November... The trees dress up for my birthday. The mornings (now a little lighter) are crisp and everywhere smells good.

It's partly because of my love of autumn that I have embraced the more American tradition of Halloween. I carved my first pumpkin two years ago. I was with Misty in her apartment in Willmington. I decided about then that Halloween was going to be a lot more fun each year.

Last year we had Misty's folks over (as it was just before our wedding) and we carved pumpkins and invited a few friends over. It turned into a surprise birthday party which made it twice as much fun.

This year we had a party. We planned for a month. We got stuff in. Even though Misty works now she (with lots of help from nuala) did a lot of baking. The house was cleaned (another good reason for a party... it seems to be about the only time the house gets a REALLY good clean... ) and last minute shopping was done.

About 5 o'clock - the official starting time - the kitchen was still a mess, the decorations were not finished - the pumpkins unlit. We are all thankful that the first guests bradders et al arrived at least half an hour later. The cats were surprisingly unaffected by the influx of bodies, even when the children started chasing them round the living room they saw it as a game.

The pumpkins looked great! (Even if I say so myself) Friday night Dad and Bianca came over, and nuala, Misty and I picked a pumpkin each and a stencil (yeah yeah - we cheated!) Bianca being the contrary one as ever chose the most difficult stencil. The one I would have liked to do was too tall for my pumpkin, so I had to go for a second choice. To give Bianca all due credit - she most patiently "traced" the stencil onto the pumpkin after removing it's guts. By this time it was well past her bed time - so I carved. Misty also ran out of time (she was cooking) so I carved half of hers too. I think that's where my back problems came from! Pictures have been taken - but are at home - I'll be uploading them soon™ Edit: Pics here

Mum came! - Thanks mum :-*

We bobbed for apples. "The Guv'ner's" youngest was slightly amused by the whole proceedings (I believe she is yet to reach her first birthday) as she grabbed the apples with her hands as if to say "surely it's easier this way?" The older children played fair... after I removed the stalks from all the apples of course!

I think I have to mention my Dad at this point. Our local team won a cup game qualifier on Saturday.. and Dad was there. To celebrate the win - and the draw against Charlton - dad had a "couple" glasses of wine at the club. When he got to our he was already a little merry! I asked him if he wanted a beer... "Oh no" - he says - "I'm on the red wine!" I ask him what red wine, to which he replies "Yours!"

By the time we was bobbing for apples he was very merry... and soaking wet. He did cheer the kids on tho - so it wasn't bad.

After the bobbing we started with the fireworks. I had ordered a box from Jeff which Mum and Dad got for me for my birthday. The best present for a pyro-son! Gary also brought a (big) box and I had a few "cakes" and rockets left over from the 4th July party. The box I had ordered was supposed to be "low noise"... like hell it was! I was surprised to note almost none of the children were scared - I think the only exception was the Guv'ner's youngest... but after a quick swig of Daddies beer she fell asleep.

The fireworks where great - even if they was a lot more noisy than intended... and the massive 61 shot finale piece was great.

After that most of the peeps with kids left. (it was gone 9!) leaving a few who got steadily drunk as the night went on. I think it was well gone midnight before the house was ours alone. nuala and Misty tidied while I tried to drink the last of my beer. All in all - a fantastic night. Here endeth the first of the annual Park Halloween parties. Be warned - next years will be fancy dress!

The first pumpkin to die was mine.

Sunday started late - but not as late as we first thought because the clocks have gone back an hour. I cooked breakfast whilst the kitchen was tidied. After breakfast I ironed shirts for the week. By then it was late and I was drained. I also ached from head to toe and my back was killing me, and my throat was very sore. It was Gary who suggested a suspect for the sore throat - he had one as well - breathing all that firework smoke probably didn't do me a lot of good!

I played Eve for the first time in over a week. Some of the other players were concerned for my well being! I even managed to catch a quick chat with Misty's dad. After an extended corp. mine I headed off to slumber land.

Today - I am a year older. I got into work late (we hadn't cleaned out the cat litter last night - and the last thing I want on returning home is a living room full of cat excretions.) - but the good news was - everyone who came along to the party seems to have enjoyed themselves.

In even better news the stuff both Misty and I ordered from Amazon arrived at the 'rents this morning.

A sidenote: this song is the strangest song I know...
