As we pass the halfway mark of another working week... - The Paranoid Android

As we pass the halfway mark of another working week...
I have three main projects on the go.

OneDesk : of the 8 or so companies we used to be there are currently 4 different desktop "Builds" used in the Finance Department. The aim in the next couple of months is to get this to a single desktop build... or OneDesk! This is an OS upgrade (as well as a hardware upgrade) and all the current applications must be tested to see if they work on the new build.

GFA tactical solution: Part of the GFA project was to provide a "straight through process" from our general ledger to the profitability system. Currently we use spreadsheets created by keying in figures from a GL report which are then loaded into the profitability systems via a process called the "two in one" or 2:1 As the GFA project is on hold the tactical solution will be to provide a link from our current GL straight into the profitability system.

UK funds database : another "straight through process" much like the one above, except our current GL can't provide the necessary granularity for a direct feed. We need to create a database that will take the current data warehouse information and output a feed to the profitability system at the required level. But if only it was that simple. The "actual" figures we get will not be available early enough to use, so we need to use a best guess. These best guesses are not at the required granularity either, so we need to split the best guess by the same proportions as the previous month's actuals - which should be available by then. This has to be about the worst "straight through process" I can think of. I thought the idea of automatic feeds was to eventually improve data quality. All we are doing is making up more numbers. I have no idea how the hell it can take someone an entire month to work out how much commission was paid, or how much business we've done in the previous 30 days.

The first two are being hampered by our upcoming merger. Our resources are being stolen one by one so progress will be almost impossible. The third requires me to create (and reconcile) three feeds by the end of this month. The resource for this project: Dave and Myself - which is amusing because that’s the same resource for the first two projects as well.

I found out today I screwed up the CPP feed this month. I'm not entirely sure how I managed to do it - but I deleted about 1,500 rows of data from the input file. It's taken me most of the day to confirm that it was indeed me that caused the problems and not a fault with the process/database. PEBCAK.

I'd like to book a nervous breakdown for next week please.

Ah, Life in the coprorate world. If it's any consolation, these types of problems are rampant in corporate America too. So you're not alone.

It's consolation to know that I'm not the only one - it's no consolation to know that even if I jack this job in it's going to be the same no matter where I go.
