hello world!
What an interesting day in LJ land...

In the past 24-36 hours lots and lots of things have been happening with the LJ code... the most significant being the loss of the invite code system. Now new users can create an account without getting "codez" from an existing user.

Of course, something as monumental as this (in LJ terms of course) has sparked a lot of "OMGOMGOMG" comments, some of which are just too funny to ignore. People are predicting the end of LJ; ads, spam, abuse and general slowness. How the hell they come to those decisions when they have no knowledge of how the LJ servers are set up and working beats me. The fact that the LJ admins are confident they are doing the right thing suggests to me we have nothing to worry about.

There are others complaining that they will loose the ability to invite their friends... I am so amazed at the short-sightedness of this I'll repeat it for you again... they will loose the ability to invite their friends.

Surely by getting rid of the invite system they will now be able to "invite" as many friends as they like? Having just under 300 unused invite codes myself I think I'm justified in calling them small minded jerks... of course I think I'm justified in all my actions... but that's just me!

If you want to read through the morons trolling you should really have news added as a friend.

This brings me to a separate, but related point. Why is it people read the first line of a post and then comment with a stupid question that is answered a little deeper in the original post. The classic example of the last 2 days has to be the number of free users asking if/when their accounts will be deleted. Why don't these people read the whole post before asking a question that makes them look incredibly stupid to the thousands of people who read the news posts?

This of course relates to the news (in lj_biz) that inactive accounts may now be deleted and purged so that the namespace may be re-used. I'm entirely ambivalent to this piece of news because 1) I don't have any inactive accounts and 2) I have my first choice of username! But I guess I can understand someone’s frustration of wanting marvin only to find it was created years ago, but never used.

Current Mood: amused amused

funny. people bitched then the codes started and now they bitch that the codes are gone. *rolls eyes* make up your friggin minds!!

By why did they get rid of the code system? do they feel they can handle a higher influx of users mow or what? I'm just curious and really too lazy to look at the ljnews/paiduser/etc journals.

lol ... tsk tsk!

I think they are now confident they can cope with an influx of new users, and also cope with spambots and abuse cases... only time will tell for sure.

I seem to remember that LJ's growth was almost exponencial before the codes were introduced... now there are so many other LJ clones out there perhaps the growth will be sane? It will be interesting keeping an eye on the number of accounts created over at the stats page.

PS- I think the deletion of inactive accounts is an EXCELLENT idea. you dont' use a journal after 3 months, you're probably not gonna come back anyway.

Also, do they reuse journal names of journals that have been deleted? I know it SAYS after 30 days the name is purged, but I've had journals that I deleted and after like 2 months the name was still there. Are they really going to purge deleted journals recycle those names too? That would be a great asset.

The lj_biz posts suggest these names will be available for use. Perhaps they really are going to start to purge those accounts after 90 days or whatever it says now.

What happened to your LJ? It says you are deleted! :(

Note to self... at time of posting there were 1414441 accounts in existence. What a pretty number.

I'm always being whinged at for not reading enough 'info' before coming to a conclusion.

This time I'm not second guessing, I shall wait and see what happens. I don't often pay for such services, but I like lj and it's hardly expensive. Lets see what the stats are like next year. Then I'll decide if I think it's a good decision or bad.

I couldn't have my first choice of name, but there aren't that many sites that would let you have 'Aprettyscareyfairey' anyway :)

I don't think I have an opinion either way. I think a purge now would be advantageous - especially considering the influx that will now occur - if someone wanted to save their 'extra' journal, then they simply need to go post something so that it's not showing 'unused' for 3 months. Durrr.

I've actually been toying with the idea of a paid account. But then, once I start working, I don't know that I'll have as much time to put in here, so will it really be worth it for me? I don't mind supporting LJ, that's not the issue. I'd be interested in a paid user giving me some pros and cons for obtaining a paid account :o)

ps. Kicking myself for not sticking around for beer last night. Meh. :(
