"ter-wist-ed Puter Killa"
Yet another PC bytes the dust. My long suffering work PC has given up the ghost - it is no more - it's a PC-gone ...

This is only a mild annoyance due to the fact that Karen isn't in today, and so I'm using her PC. The mild annoyance is the fact that it has taken me near 5 years to get that PC to work the way I like it to.

There are silly things like screen saves and desktop backgrounds, but then there are fundamental things like shortcut keys and small fonts that have taken months of dedicated internet searches.

Why is my machine not backed up you may ask... and I will answer! Work policy is for nothing of "importance" to be stored on the hard disks of the PC's. This should allow me to work from *any* PC in the building and not loose anything if my PC dies. So there is no backing up of PC's.

Backing up shortcut keys and configurations is just not possible unless you are creating a backup image of the machine. These things get stored all over the place. "ini" files, registry keys, pif's and icons all have their own way of saving information.

I've also managed to install (or even have installed for me by less than brilliant techies) several "non standard" bits of software. These have made my life a lot easier at times, and a damn sight more bearable!

The annoying thing is this has taken so much time and now it's all lost. I'll be back to a virgin build, with Corporation Regulation colours and sizes.

I'll have lost semagic, and AIM, and photo editor, and various excel addins, plus my fonts.

I suppose I should be glad that my bookmarks will be saved... after all every cloud does have that silver lining.

Current Mood: a sad loss
