Why reading the news is bad.
Yesterday the "Muslim community" in Tayside took offence to a police advert because it featured a dog (a black Alsation puppy) sitting in a policeman's hat. Dogs are considered unclean by Muslims... so the police issued an apology.

This is the kind of news that makes me angry. The police should not apologise. If you believe dogs are unclean (and they are - all animals are unclean, and dogs can be especially disgusting at times) then don't own one. Being offended by a picture of one is ridiculous. I was ready to rant about the bloody erosion of sensibilities by pushy minorities before slumping into a fit of apathetic depression.

Today we find out a little more... the "Muslim community" is actually just the one Muslim, a councillor by the name of Mohammed Asif who has stopped answering his phone today. Talking to people in the real world it would appear that no offence was taken at all really.

The sharper ones amongst you might have noticed the first news article was in that well respected journalistic Daily Mail... while the second was in the disreputable Times. (You'll never know how much it hurt me to type well respected and Daily Mail in the same sentence even if it was for sarcasm's sake).

Sensationalistic news is evil. It divides. It causes unrest. It is irresponsible at best. It's fast becoming the only type of news available in this country. The last bastillions of hope, the likes of the Independent, the Times and that once great institution the BBC, are being eroded and they too are printing stories intended to shock or awe instead of inform.

Do have to wonder why they even put the puppy in the poster in the first place, it's not exactly relevant.

It appears he (Rebel with paws!) is being used in a lot of promotional liturature in the Tayside area..

He even has his own webcam!

I guess the Tayside police are trying to promote a softer side of the force?
