More Da Vinci Madness
I have spent most of the evening watching Channel 5's "investigation" into the truths behind Dan Brown's Da Vinci code and Angels and Demons. I use the word investigation very loosely. This a continuation of the sound-bite documentary... repeating the same "facts" with irrelevant visuals and dramatic music.

Are these modern documentaries a product of a nation with a 5 second attention span... or the other way around?

The people interview came across as either crack-pot conspiracy theorists or pompous asses out of touch with today's society. The middle ground was completely ignored.

I wanted to know which parts of these books were facts, which were established myths, and finally what was Brown's fiction. I did not want to hear from an art expert telling me I was silly for reading such nonsense. I read each of these books knowing full well the story is a work of fiction. I think stories based on History and Myth are both damn good fun and educational - IF you bother to try and find out which parts are fact!

The main problem with trying to find facts about controversial issues like religion is many people are willing to present lies as facts. The programs I saw tonight did nothing to aid in finding facts - they just gave equal time to both extremists to present their "truth" which was nothing more than opinion.

There was very little of the show dedicated to the symbology used in the books. There was nothing about the amount of masonic symbols used in the specific churches in Rome mentioned in the book, or the fact that there is an all seeing eye on the bank notes of America with the tag Novus Ordo Seclorum... although a little Internet research shows Brown has been a little sneaky with his translation into New World Order. (The Latin is closer to New order of the ages.)

All in all - a very disappointing set of programs.

What if I just think that Dan Brown is a really poor writer?

You have a good point.

I too think his writing style is bad - it's real trash novel writing. I think the story is captivating. I find his quirks of mentioning upcoming plot devices a little annoying... but as I am very unlikely to re-read his books it didn't stop me from enjoying the story too much.

It's prolly cos he's nicked the story from someone else ;o)

Many other people!

That's partly why it's so easy to believe some of it. You 've probably heard most of it before in some form or another... it's a clever form of writing (in a lazy way!)

I watched half of the first programme. Due to the fact it was Ella's bedtime so i missed half through her crying (demon child) anyway i've watched a few documentaries on the whole Dan Brown *conspiracy theories* I think religion is such a vague but passionate subject (after all isn't the bible just stories passed around and down through generations before being written by man?)
It's just an interesting and thought provoking work of fiction (Da vinci code or maybe i mean the bible ;p) Neverless the fact that it has been such a best seller and caused so much controversy, especially with the catholic church causing such a fuss over it.
Even thou Dan Brown isn't the most literary of writers (Who actually is nowadays?), he has in fact made himself infamous by taking alot of people's ideas about this subject and turning them into a pretty daym good book. I'm just waffling here ;x

Bernard Cornwell does a similar thing with a lot of his books... he takes a well known myth/historical theme and tells a story around it.

My favourites so far have been the Arthur ledgends (The Winter King, The Enemy of God, and Excalibur) and a grail quest series set during the hundred years war (Harlequin, Vagabond, and Heretic). His writing is very good - at least by my judgement! :)

He's been lucky... that doesn't make him a bad person! :p It's the same with Rowling... she's not that good a writer either - she just produced the right (rite?) story at the right time.

J.K Rowling did the classic nick little bits from different classics and roll it around into something of her own. Imo she's very clever to have done this at the right time as you said

Oh, no, I never said he was a bad person. He's just a jammy clever bastard. (And I was being quippy.)

The Da Vinci Code is about half established myth and half Brown's fiction, with less than a handful of actual facts in it. The myth comes from the "Gnostic Gospels" which were discounted from being fact quite early in the Church. (I'm not sure, but I think they were out by 200 AD, if not before.)
