Ads - on LJ!
It's been a long time coming... but over in lj_biz, bradfitz reveals plans to put ads on some journal pages.

Nothing is finalised yet... but it looks like they will offer perks for people to volunteer to have ads on their pages. These perks would be a (unspecified) limited subset of the paid account perks. Logged in paid users will not see ads anywhere on the site, free users can opt not to have ads on their pages - but will see ads on the journals of those people who decide to opt in.

To clear things up a little, ursamajor created the following table:

Will I see ads? If so, where? Free/Early Adopter Users Ad-Supported Users Paid/Perm Users
Free/EA Journals No No No
Ad-Supported Journals Yes Yes No
Paid/Perm Journals No No No
Profile Pages On Ad-Supported Users On Ad-Supported Users No
Comment/Entry Pages On Ad-Supported Users On Ad-Supported Users No
Other Site Scheme Pages No Yes No

The fall out is predictable.  A lot of people with paid accounts are unconcerned.  There are the drama queens saying they will not use the site.  There are the free loaders users complaining that they will see ads if one of their friends decide to opt-in.  There are conclusions being jumped to at an amazing rate.  There are the "tl dr;" who ask questions answered in the original post.

As is becoming usual, azurelunatic sums it up nicely in her amusing post.

How do I feel about it?  It's been inevitable.  I'm surprised it's taken so long, and I'm surprised the free users still have the option to use the majority of the functionality of LJ without having adverts on their pages.  Look at any other "free" journal site and you'll see ads.  As a paid user I am glad I won't see ads anywhere.

It is sad that this had to happen.  LJ's large adolescent user base has meant that only a few percent of accounts are paid for.  Kids are either not going to have the money, or method to pay - and paying for the sake of the community is not going to be high on the average kid's agenda!  I hope enough of those whiny free loaders who are always asking for "more free stuff" opt in for the ads.  I hope the revenue from those ads is enough to keep LJ a viable business.  I don't want to code my own blog, I like the way things work here too much.

It's sad, but in a way this is a proud moment.  LJ has grown up.  It's gone from a college boy's project, to an open source dream, to a real business model... and I was there to see the majority of its stages.  I look at LJ as if it were a friends kid - and I'm now seeing it go out and get it's first job.

I didn't call *you* a free loader!

You haven't complained that you'll see adverts! 98% of LJ accounts are free - and that's the community I like! I just can't for the life of me understand how someone who doesn't pay for their account can complain so much about steps being taken to keep the site running!

hehehe i was winding *you* up >looks for your sense of humour... no it's not there :X<
I totally agree though if they're bothered about a few adverts that will help keep the site running then they should be prepared to pay... This is why i don't bother with communities always full of whingers :P

Thats just beautiful :)

I used to pay, but since I went back to being a goddamned poor student I can't afford it. I rarely use LJ these days anyway though :(

As long as they're not those annoying flash ad's that take over what you are trying to read or pop-up's I wouldn't mind if ads were on every page - and I pay!

I shouldn't see any - so I'm not that concerned...

There's a spiteful part of me that wants all the whinging people to end up with nasty flash ads and popups just to mess with them! :)
