Let it snow...
Misty woke me up this morning telling me it was snowing.  By the time I surfaced it was no longer snowing, and the ground wasn't white.  I was a little disappointed because I'd missed it.

By the time I'd finished getting ready for work it was snowing again!  It was a nasty wet snow... not the sort of stuff you want to be out in... but it does look good.  Shame I had to go out in it to get to work!

I must have looked like a tramp this morning.  I have been feeling cold on my journeys home from work, so this morning I wore two coats!  (Well, a fleece and a coat to be exact.)  As it was cold and wet out I was wearing trainers with my suit.  Trainers, suit trousers, and two coats make you look a lot like a tramp.  The peaked cap set the ensemble off perfectly!

I'm sitting it work now in a short sleeve shirt because the temperature in here is 27° (80) Switching between a wind chilled -1°(30) outside to 27° in here is enough to really mess you up.  I have a thick head and feel permanently lethargic.

I'm also juggling 3 separate projects.  Having my wits about me might be handy!

Last Friday and yesterday were good days.  They remind me why I like working in a project area.  We are working on how to better utilise our new general ledger.  The new system should be able to save people time and provide better, accurate, more timely information.  Of course it doesn't at the moment because people don't know how to get it to do those wonderful things... or they are too busy doing the things the system could do to take the time to get the system to do them!

Mike, Dave and I are there to give them the time and the information they need.  I had an idea a while ago - adding a user configurable table to the ledger so we could have descriptions appear on the reports that make sense to the users.  Mike had idea along the same lines for an automated GLRS system.  Last Friday Mike, Dave and I talked about it and Mike suggested an existing table.  This has up to 10 user configurable fields and is indexed by the entire code block.  With a nice front end, and some bulk updates this would work nicely for us.

Yesterday Mike came over and we had a "brain storming" session where we fleshed out our ideas.  Mike had already built a prototype in the Dev region!  It worked well - and it looks like we can get this built and tested for the mini release in May.  I'm really excited about this project - an idea of mine (even if it wasn't entirely original) will be built and could save the Legal Entity guys a lot of time and effort.  It will also increase accuracy and control around some reporting I'm working on at the moment.

So I'm all pumped up about the GL utilization project.  If only all projects where like that!

Which reminds me of a Scott Adams quote (From the Dilbert Principle).

If you're not on a "project" then you probably have a thankless, boring, repetitive job.  You're like an ant carrying crumbs back to the ant hole over and over again.
But if you are working on a project, life is very different.  You're still an ant carrying crumbs, but there's a Russian Squat-Dancing* festival between you and the anthill.  And you spend much of your waking hours fantasizing about how great it would be to have a thankless, boring, repetitive job.

*Yeah I'm sure there's another name for it.  But they should call it Squat-Dancing.

Ahhh - you gotta love Scott Adams!

This post was started at Lunch - it's now almost home time.  I've been a busy boy all after noon!

Yesterday's Dilbert nearly killed me with the boss draining the computer because his "internet was full." I clipped it out of the newspaper and put it on the fridge.

I'd take any kind of snow right now. It's HOT here.
