Appalled from Texas
A small local newspaper in Crawford Texas published an editorial condemning the failing of George W. Bush over the last four years. The author (and owner of the newspaper) has received all sorts of threats, including violence.

Crawford Texas is a small town whose people are proud to call "The Home of George W. Bush" ... so needless to say it caused a bit of a stir. Lots of people were disgusted that anyone would be so traitorous to denounce the head of the government from his chosen home town. Lots cancelled their subscription. Many called, sent mail, and emailed.

It is the emails that shock me the most. (all email quotes are reproduced as is - they are copied and pasted) Italics denotes the email - anything not in italics is me.

From the calm (accurate? - I have no idea) responses like:
Your options listed in your iconoclast article regarding President Bush are nothing more than fabricated lies that are extremer left-winged liberal hatred.

After reading your recent editorial endorsement of John Kerry I believe your readers have the right to know that many of the items you have credited to President Bush are either misrepresented or out of his control.

As a Vietnam Veteran and after reading your editorial, I can't come to your same concussion.

to the emails written by the criminally insane, the mindless masses and seriously petty :
You are pathetic.....the rest of Texas will turn on your paper....you just made a big mistake.

How dare you. Our beloved President has graced your tiny little burg with the presence (or at least proximity) of his favorite vacation home, and this is how you repay him? (I'm really not sure if this isn't a joke... the rest of the mail is a little bizarre to say the least)

I don't know who made you God and primary decision make of your paper, but this decision needs to be re-thought and you need to be fired! [...] I wish for you nothing but hugh losses of subscribers for your paper. (Hugh spelling mistake to make!)

I wish I lived in your city so I could cancel my subscription and boycott anyone who advertised in your paper.

I wonder if your comments regarding President Bush and your endorsement of opponent Kerry would still have been the same if your newspaper had been operating in Iraq.(WTF? You think the Iraqi population want another 4 years of Bush?)

I have for years know some Texans were full of BULLSHIT but your endorsement of Kerry is a beacon for the SHITHEAD center of the world! Thank you for proving me correct.

I can't believe your paper doesn't support one of you home town people George W. Bush. I hope you get your belly full of that " Liar John Kerry " Flipper. Hope you paper goes belly up. (Voting for the guy who lives next door is, of course, the only sound political policy to have!)

Cancel my subscription to the Iconoclast. If your editor cannot support the Crawford candidate for president then I will not support the Iconoclast.

Why not move to Iraq if you are so unhappy???(This is a contender for most immature response I read.)

Pox on your biased little bird cage liner. You should move north.

You guys are real pricks for supporting Kerry. If he makes it to office this country will fall apart and will be attacked on a regular basis and American lives will be lost. [...] KERRY IS A PUSSY! (Bush is doing what to prevent attacks on Americans?)

As a "regular American" who has never voted in a Presidential Election - the choice is now cleared then ever before. I am voting for George W. Bush (huh? - Someone who admits they never vote has the balls to attack someone for voicing an opinion.)

You sir, are a dunderhead. (This was not a quote - this was an entire email!)

I will never support your paper again either in Clifton or in Crawford. I will ask that Stephen Cook, who takes your athletic pictures, to sell to the McGregor paper. I will also not support the business that continue to support your paper. (And I'll take my ball home.)

and finally the five year olds whose mummy shouldn't let near the keyboard again:
YOU MUST BE THE BIGGEST IDIOT NEWSPAPER IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY. JOHN KERRY IS A BIG LIAR AND SO ARE YOU AND YOUR NEWSPAPER!!!

THIS IS BUSH COUNTY GET USED TO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Woah with the exclamation marks!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

and this entire email written on a keyboard with a faulty caps lock?:

DEAR NEWSPAPER
I AM SO DISSAPOINTED IN WHAT YOU HAVE DONE.BY ENDORSING ANY CANADITE REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT YOU HAVE STEPPED OVER THE LINE. A NEWSPAPER IS SUPPOSE TO PROVIDE NEWS,NOT PROVIDE OPINIONS. ONE OF THE OLDEST RULES IN THE NEWSPAPER INDUSTRY IS NOT TO ENDORSE ANY CANADITE.I AM SO SORRY TO SEE THAT YOUR PAPER HAS GONE TO THIS TYPE OF EXTREME.YOU WILL GET YOUR 15 MINUTES OF FAME,BUT YOU WILL ALSO LOOSE A LOT OF READERS FROM THIS. I HOPE YOU THINK THAT OPENING YOUR MOUTH WAS WORTH EMBARRASING YOUR TOWN OF CRAWFORD.I AM SURE THAT THE ABC INTERVIEW GOING ON RIGHT NOW WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE.THE ONLY THING IT REALY DOES IS SHOW HOW BIG YOUR BUTT IS!
I AM SO ASSHAMED OF YOU AND YOUR PAPER.
JS (AMERICAN CITIZEN)
(Dissapointing indeed... I find I can not endorse the school this person went (goes?) to. I believe they may be a canadite for compulsive adult education.)

There was a lot of positive mail sent it too... a few from other areas of Texas, some from Texans no longer living there. One included an interesting (to me) statement that Bush is not a Texan (he spent all his formative years elsewhere) and that he gives a bad name to Texans All in all a lot of emotion about a newspaper whose average circulation is about 500 or so. Most of the positive mail was not about the fact the owner of the newspaper supported Kerry, but that he had the balls to print that fact in his paper.

In the UK we rely a lot more on the nationals... local newspapers are generally consigned to the recycling bin without being opened. Our nationals are all biased towards a political ideal. The less sophisticated ones (the rags or tabloids) are blatant with their support... with headlines like "If you can't bring yourself to support conservative today, don't vote at all." (A real Sun headline from the Thatcher era! - Bizarre that the Sun is now considered a left-wing paper)

The reason I write about this is my shock at some of the opinions and actions of the people of Crawford. Some believe opinion has no place in an editorial. Others not only boycott the paper but insist they will boycott anyone whose adverts appear inside. Not reading the paper is not enough - the paper must fold... the writers must loose their jobs... anyone contributing money must go out of business... W Leon Smith must be hurt! I can feel the hate from here.

What the fuck happened to the idea of Freedom of Speech and of the press? Is the (Texan) American way of life so removed from the ideals that founded it? No matter who you support or plan to vote for in the upcoming election - information about the candidates should be welcomed. Opinions contrary to your own can only strengthen your resolve... if you are voting for the right person? I know some of you reading this have different political views from my own. I know of a few who might actually think Bush is the right man to lead America for the next 4 years. I respect your opinions, and your right to make that choice even though I believe the man to be a danger to the world in which I have to live.

I hope there is no single person reading this that believes it is right to put someone out of business because of their political beliefs. That there is no-one here who would try to silence someone because their views did not coincide. I hope there is no "Appalled from Texas" mindset outside those sorry people in Crawford TX

I'll finish with the "best" of the mails... I can only hope this person is restrained for their own safety...
You and your "newspaper" make me sick to my stomach.
It is a disgrace to have this rag printed in our great state of Texas. I feel sorry for the people of Crawford to have someone like you in their midst.
I hope that you have saved plenty of pennies for a rainy day, because you soon will not be able to give your paper away.
I notice that your so called "paper" seems to be quite like the National Enquirer, so I will just consider the source.
Let's see......bashing President George W. Bush for vacationing. I just bet there was a time when you capitalized on that and your rag had that information on the front page.
Your reporting is biased and childish and you rant and rave like a renegade who can't quite find the cause that he is seeking, so you make things up as you go. I will be glad when one day soon, I try to pull up this website and I find that you are no longer in business.
I must ask. Are you redneck or stupid, or both? I have to guess that you must be both, because either one alone would not be quite enough to pull off a moronic blunder such as you have.
As many, many thousands of others, I am thoroughly disgusted and appalled.
Proud to be a supporter of the greatest president this country has ever seen, George W. Bush,

Appalled from Texas

Agree with me or..........

My eyes read it but my mind couldn't take it in. I am amazed at the narrow-mindedness contained in some correspondence. What are Editorials for if not for Editors to express their opinions? Freedom of speech is everyones right. We are all entitled to think or say what we feel without fear of retribution.
What a sad little place Crawford must be.

I'm hoping that the local people who were so vehemently denouncing the editorial are truly not as poorly educated as the email "quotes" would appear to indicate.

Or, is this a case of selective quotation to support the political belief?

I was most amused by this one:-

"We have a presidential election coming up. And I think the big problem, of course, is that someone will win."--BC

As with all media these days you have to take it all with a pinch of salt. The fact that this debacle has made it to the national press (then the comics - which is where I picked it up) makes you wonder if these small town people are as fucked up as the emails suggest.

I weep for this planet.

Lack of tolerance is my pet hate.

I firmly believe in a person's right to have and to voice their own opinion. Even if they are (in my own humble opinion) a raving lunatic.

I also detest bullying. I hope the guy can hold on through this, I know I'd like to shake his hand and buy him a drink. Not because I believe or disbelieve in what he had/has to say, just because he stood up and said what he believed.

I'm with you on that... If, in my travels west, I can ever make it to Bumfuk Texas (also know as Crawford) I'll search him out and buy him a drink too.
